Thankfully, Sonic’s next game won’t be in a first-person view, but Team Sonic head Takashi Iizuka has hinted that it will serve as a reboot to the franchise, stating that his team is taking its time to ensure that it rises above the mixed reception of past 3D installments like the infamous Sonic ‘06. Even Skyth admits that watching the video “ is going to badly hurt your eyes.”
Unfortunately, this idea was probably better off on paper, as the result is that the camera suddenly jerks, spins, and tumbles to keep up with the high-octane gameplay the Sonic franchise is known for. Now, one brave soul has decided to merge these two aspects, much to the motion sickness of anyone who dares check out their handiwork for themselves. Meanwhile, mods for Sonic games are every bit as bizarre as Sega’s colorful platforming franchise itself, with one, in particular, allowing the titular blue Hedgehog to play the original Doom within 2017’s Sonic Mania. Switching the traditionally third-person camera to a first-person perspective is also a favorite pastime for modders, who have given players a chance to see the Milky Way through the eyes of Mass Effect’s Commander Shepard or roam the lands of Hyrule as Link from The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. Mods can be great fun for curious players, either restoring cut game content or generating a laugh or two by replacing a fearsome boss with Shrek or Thomas The Tank Engine. The result proves why most games keep the camera either on the Blue Blur’s side or behind his shoulders. One Sonic The Hedgehog fan has modded 2010’s Sonic Generations to be played from a first-person perspective.
